Improve Family Life with a Touch of Self-Care

At this time of year, many mums begin to feel frazzled! The dark nights, gloomy days and onset of festive chaos can be completely overwhelming and exhausting. However, there is an answer to improving the situation and every mum needs to be willing to give it a go. It’s self-care – the essential ingredient to being a happy, fun mum!

Many mums tend to focus solely on the needs and demands of their family, without sparing a thought for themselves. Mums continually dash about, taking the children to dance classes, football practice, music lessons, swimming galas, birthday parties – the list is endless! On top of that comes the housework, tummies to feed with a healthy diet (have you had your five-a-day today?) and a career! It’s no wonder many mums are so tired and unfulfilled with life!


 If you constantly find yourself taking care of the needs of others but never your own, ask yourself how much you value yourself. If you never find time to satisfy your own needs, how can you truly value your own life? It is essential you take time out to relax, revitalise yourself and enjoy life!

Self-care is essential to the well-being and happiness of a person. It is vital to ensuring your happiness and fulfilment with life. It allows you to take time out to recharge whilst enjoying a hobby or relaxation. Self-care enables you to improve your outlook on life. Being a happy mum goes hand in hand with being a better parent: you will feel refreshed, recharged and ready to take on another day of relentless chores!

Fitting it into your schedule is made easier through insistence. You owe it to yourself to take some time out. Schedule time in your diary to enjoy an evening with friends, time at the gym, a long soak in your favourite bubble bath or whatever you enjoy doing. Guard the time so you don’t give it up to satisfy someone else’s needs! Whatever you choose to do with your scheduled ‘me time’, ensure you make it your quality time. Enjoy every minute of it and you will soon be raring to go!

Do not get caught in the trap of thinking you cannot leave the house else everything will fall apart! Rely on your support network: husband, partner, extended family members and babysitters who can all help to take care of your children, while you take some vital time out to care for yourself.

Remember it is okay to put yourself first sometimes. Your family will all benefit from a happier, livelier mum. Time out will give you the time to reflect on life, enable you to fulfil your own basic needs and allow you to be content. Looking after yourself will reinvigorate you and restore your energy levels. A happier woman always makes a better, more loving mum: so what have you got to lose? Let the whole family benefit: take some time out to start enjoying yourself, for you. It’s vital for a lifetime of confidence, balance and joy!
